At FISHER ARCHitecture, we enjoy finding new residential uses for existing city space and discovering unlikely ways to provide an existing building's highest and best use. This project was a great opportunity: The new owner of a vacant Echo Park auto-body shop was exploring the possibility of converting his garage into luxury urban housing.
Our team proposed converting each of five existing garage bays into townhouses. Then we proposed doubling the area of each unit by adding a new second floor. The bedrooms are at grade while the upstairs living room opens to the lake view. Outdoors, wire mesh green-screens privatize the front porches and continue indoors to become book shelves and cabinets.
