I was designer, architect, and project manager of this "green" Pittsburgh icon. The market is comprised of three existing warehouses to which we added a new, east facing, metal-paneled entrance building. Our intent was to connect the exterior to the open, light-filled interior as directly as possible in order to allow passers-by a glimpse of the activity within.

A glass and steel canopy extends from the entry out into the sidewalk creating an arcade that guides guests to the front door. The canopy blocks the rain but allows light to penetrate far into the interior. Exposing the edges of the canopy glass merges the glass with the sky.

The plans may be simple, but visitors note that the building is carefully detailed and well built. Coordinating the construction was a difficult but successful learning process for me: The market won an AIA honor award and has experienced twice the number of customers as were expected!

The photos are by noted Pittsburgh photographer, Alexander Denmarsh.
