This piece was designed for the Fisher ARCHitecture designed deck of Steve and Andi Irwin’s Squirrel Hill home. Craftsman, Vince Gillen, crafted the cherry tabletop you see here from three long boards he milled from fallen trees found in the woods behind his Hanover Township home.
After a long discussion in the office, we made the decision to explore the organic properties of steel, the least flexible of building materials, in order to create a base that would complement the natural qualities of the wood above. Our goal was to invest the same respect and care in our base as Vince, who has been a certified Green Craftsman since 2004, was investing in the top. In the end we designed and crafted the welded steel object from simple 1″ x 1/4″ flat bar steel sections and 1 1/2″ diameter pipe rails.
