Negley Mod Interiors
Negley Mod Interiors: The owners asked us if we would be interested in designing built-in furniture for their existing Negley Avenue home. We quickly discovered that it takes the same energy, rigor, and design skill to design furniture as it takes to design a home or, for that matter, a city. The project was completed with exceptional craft on time and within the owners’ budget by the folks at Briarwood Woodworking.

Read More >We concentrated our efforts primarily in three locations:
Location 1: The Entry
The clients’ existing front door opened directly into their living room. Our primary goal was to partially enclose the entry with maple-clad casework in order to provide a transition space between outdoors and indoors. Our second goal was to infill the casework with a variety of programatic elements including a key closet, a mirror, pencil drawers, cabinets, book shelves and, most interesting, a built-in planter that screens the entry space from the adjacent children’s play area and directs visitors forward into the home.
Location 2: The Owners’ Bedroom
Second, we designed a wall of casework for the clients’ bedroom. Our intent was to provide a view from the bed to a television and to shelves where the owners could display family pictures. Similar to at the entry, we added a built-in planter with a grow light in order to bring the outdoors in. Last, we provided storage that we hid in the casework and in the project’s aluminum base.
Location 3: The Office
Third, we designed a wall of shelves and a desk for an office that the owners could enclose with an elegant curtain. We cantilevered the desk in order to provide as much visual connection as possible between the office and the owners’ adjacent den. Also, we lit all the shelves with LED strip lighting to call attention to the owners’ books and photos. In the process, we also showcased the beautiful wood and back-painted glass backsplash. Fitting the owners’ program into the small room was no easy task. There were outlets and registers along with existing doors and windows that limited our design options. In the end, however, we feel our intervention leaves the room nearly as open as it was before our intervention.
