243 Claremont Drive

First there was a well-designed 70’s modern Lower Burrell home at 243 Claremont Drive. Then, early in 2020, the owners, Kenyetta and Ericka, built an addition only to discover it didn’t look the way they hoped. Fisher ARCHitecture was invited to the table shortly thereafter to unite the new building with the old one.

Our formal intent at 243 Claremont Drive was:

  1. To dematerialize the oversized new mass by cladding it with a slatted wood scrim
  2. To relate the addition to the existing home by continuing elements of the existing home geometry into the new construction and
  3. To disguise the new volume by foregrounding it with an earthen berm.

What better way to spend a month of pandemic-induced social isolation than carefully detailing our ideas?

I was proud of the resulting drawing set. I was also proud of our clients’ professional work. Here is a description of their business, EIG Services:

“Kenyetta and Ericka Jones established EIG Services LLC to offer superior services to adults with intellectual, developmental, or physical disabilities. EIG stands for Empowerment, Independence, and Growth, which Kenyetta and Erica passionately believe is essential for every person. They recognized that more opportunities were needed for adults with these conditions. They wanted to make a positive impact in their lives. EIG Services LLC began providing home and community services on January 31, 2015, and their first residential site was in Pittsburgh’s Greenfield neighborhood.”
